As another week ends, and a new one starts, we are beginning to face new challenges here on Leech Lake, the dreaded dog days of summer. Temps are into the mid 80’s with high sun and blue skies and little to no winds, great weather, unless you’re a walleye fisherman. The bite remains pretty good overall, recent mayfly hatches haven’t seemed to make too much of an impact, though they are everywhere, looking like oil slicks on the top of the lake water.
Water temps are now into the low 70’s, coupled with the bright blue skies we’ve been having you’re going to want to start looking for your fish in deeper, cooler water. Area’s around Stony Point (paris treanch) have been especially good, dragging lindy rigs loaded with leeches, night crawlers and spinners have been producing good numbers of fish, I’d say the keeper to throw-back ratio is about 60-40, keepers being the latter, with plenty of “overs” being caught, its making for fun days of fishing. Crank bait trolling is also beginning to heat up, the mid lake reefs are starting to put fish in the boats, North Bar (north of pelican island) Big Rock Reef, Submarine Island, and the flats near Five Mile pt, any and all colors seem to be working.
pictured above from L to R, Dillon Sunderman and his father Kevin from St. Rose, MNÂ both sporting 25 inch walleye caught near Grassy point, with jigs and shiners, and a shot of the father-son duo with a nice 42 inch muskie caught tossing buck tails in Uram bay. The cover photo up top is of Mike Way from Shoreview, MN with a dandy 27.5 incher, congrats on that beautiful fish!
Muskies are starting to be seen on main lake rock structure, I spent a few hours out last night (June 30th) and had a nice mid 40’s fish right up to the boat, and it was interested enough in my bait to follow about half of my figure 8, which shows that the fish are also getting into the swing of summer.
Summer is a spectacular time of year here in the Walker area, with many things to do, the Walker Lions Club puts on a great fire works display, with many other activities, Itasca State Park is only a short drive away, with things to do for children of all ages.
