Walleye Whereabouts

Posted on July 28, 2014 · Posted in Leech Lake Fishing Report

Another short week has come and gone here on Leech Lake and we’ve once again asked ourselves, “where have the walleye gone?” the weather is into its summer swing of things with highs in the 80’s, plenty of sunshine and consistent winds, water temps are north of 70 degrees and stringers of walleye are still nowhere to be found, we’re seeing a rogue walleye from time to time just not the quantities that we’re used too. Anglers that are catching some are mainly trolling crankbaits on mid-lake reefs, which is the prefered method of finding walleye this time of year. You’re going to have to work a little harder, and stay out a little longer to get some keepers right now. I would continue to troll crawfish, perch, and firetiger colored shad raps or flicker shads in 8-12 feet of water, around Mokey, Big Rock, and Fleschs reefs and area’s around Submarine Island and Annex, and along the west break line of Pelican island. don’t be afraid to sneak a little shallower in low light periods.

Northern fishing on the other hand has been above average with multiple fish over 30 inches and into the 7.5 pound plus range coming in daily, they are being caught pretty much every where too, rock reefs with crank baits, weedy bays with spinners and spoons and even on chunks of night crawlers in our harbor.

Pictured below from L to R: Kayla Larson from Bloomington, Mn with a dandy bass she caught while fishing in our kids fishing tournament, that bass got her the biggest fish of the tourney, good job!, Matt Schultz with his 2 kids Elsie and Riley from the Albert Lea area with grandpa Jerry from Ia, a shot that walleye do exist! a nice catch of 6 unders and a fat 27.5 incher that topped 8 pounds and Joe Mathieu and his daughter Callie, along with a smiling grandpa Allen, all from St. Louis, Mo

Portage bay was by far the best area to be, working top water baits and small fast-moving buck tails along the edges of the bull rushes produced fish last week, while area’s around Pelican Island and other mid-lake reefs also had many active fish.

While walleye fishing has been harder than we like it the last few weeks, early august is typically when action begins to heat up, get ahold of us and get up here, you don’t wanna miss out!
