Following a week of some of the best fishing we saw all year, we had the door slammed shut. A cold front plowed its way through northern Minnesota leaving wind and cold temperatures in its wake. Early in the week fishing remained good, walleye were on the reefs and flats and crankbaits were fooling them into the boat. As the week progressed things pretty much shut down, daytime highs were barely breaking 60, with a few days that didn’t even do that, and nighttime lows were just on the north side of freezing, and you know what that does to fishing, no more steady weather, no more bite. Luckily anglers were able to take advantage those couple of days early on, and put some fish in the freezer. As I type this it’s 74 and sunny with a 10 day forecast showing nothing but beautiful fall weather, fishing is going to rebound and be great.

With perfect steady fishing weather on its way, look for walleye and perch activity to peak, as they fatten themselves up for the long winter ahead. With fall the winds tend to blow more frequently out of the north and north-west, look for walleye along the east side of the main lake, Bear Island, Sugar and Five Mile Points, use slower presentations with live bait as the fish begin to school back up.
Look for perch in Uram, Miller and Sucker Bays, along with popular areas in the Walker Narrows – jig and a fathead will get the job done.
Muskie will be feeding heavily in the weeks to come, look for them in shallow water with deep water near by, and stick to larger profiled baits. Pelican Island, Mokey and Annex Reefs, and Submarine Island will be as good as any spots on the lake.
We had a spectacular Aurora Borealis/Northern Lights this past week – with Justin Rogers (pictured above) being quite the photographer he managed to capture quite a few wonderful shots, along with some Milky Way and other nature and wildlife images.
