We’re back for another season and oh, what a wonderful feeling! after dealing with a winter (uff-da) that seemed like it ended only a couple of days ago (we might have a few snow piles hanging around still) a little sunshine on my shoulder is an absolutely welcome feeling. This past winter was a unique one for us up here in the Northwoods, I was either sleeping or plowing snow and if you know me, I was definitely doing the former, and my employee Paul was doing the plowing, it was an entertaining off-season, to say the least!
Leech Lake decided that she was going to play with our emotions a little bit this spring, a reasonably common occurrence actually, we never get that much extra time when it comes to ice out, if we’re able to hear waves crashing on the shoreline for a week prior to opening that’s rare.
Opener 23′ started with absolutely beautiful weather and it has continued into this week, while that is great for getting a tan it’s not exactly optimal for Walleye fishing. Despite less-than-perfect conditions fishing for Walleye has been up and down, one group slays them, and the next doesn’t get a bite. This is normally where I’d drop a little hint or point you in a direction to an area on the lake where fish are biting, unfortunately, this year everyone is extra tight-lipped, I’m going to keep squeezing and hopefully some info spills out!

The following week and into the Memorial holiday is historically some of the best fishing of the season, warmer water temps shake up the pan fish bite, and Crappie and Bluegills become some of the most sought-after fish on the lake, this window of opportunity is rather small but can last a couple of weeks, area’s in Sucker Bay and Boy Bay will become congested traffic jams, and when the spawn is done it’s done.
Thank you to everyone who stayed with us over the fishing opener, we had a blast and it was great to see you! we cannot wait to see everyone else throughout the summer, my filet knife is ready for some work, 2023 is going to be a good one!
