Memories Made on Memorial Weekend

Another holiday weekend that will not soon be forgotten. While we were catching fish, scooping ice cream cones, eating pizza and jumping in the pool, please remember what the Memorial Day holiday represents . Without our son’s, daughter’s, mother’s and father’s, friends and family making the ultimate sacrifice for our country, we wouldn’t be living the life that we do – from everyone here at Big Rock, we thank you from the bottom of our hearts, if there is anything we can do for you, please, ask.

There was a frenzy of activity at the resort this weekend, with all of our cabins occupied and over three-quarters of our seasonal owners here, all of our rental boats in use, it made for a busy weekend and to top if off seemingly everyone was catching fish, except me, I was heading up operation ice cream scooper. You should see my left bicep, I’m pretty much ripped now.

With water temps finally starting to rise fish activity is also starting to improve, many of the anglers that stayed with us this weekend had pan fish on the brain, Sun Fish and Crappies typically spawn when water temps get around 55 degrees and that is right around where we are sitting now. The morning exodus of boats almost all headed north to Sucker Bay to set up shop near the Sucker River an ever popular spot for Crappie and Sun Fish as you’ll see in the following pictures, Sucker Bay did not disappoint. My dock crew had their mettles tested this weekend, a couple marathon cleaning sessions took place, I even knocked some of the dust off my filet knife and dove in. Seeing the smiles on our guests faces make the late nights and sore feet worth it and then some.

Anglers that decided to chase Walleye had a bit of a mixed experience this weekend, we had a little bit of everything weather-wise this weekend and when the wind blew, Walleye bit. Jigs tipped with Shiner minnows are still the presentation of choice and will continue to be for the next couple of weeks, though, we had a few guests that had good luck trolling crankbaits around all the boats that were sitting still slip bobber fishing on Stoney Point.

My advice for the coming week is still pretty simple, throw a bunch of shiners into a pail, grab your favorite assortment of lead head jigs and find some shallow rock structure, the windier the better. Cruise over to Big and little Hardwood points, Deadhead up in Sucker Bay, Pine and Stoney Points or East over towards Diamond Point. Soon we’ll be seeing fish move towards the mid-lake rock structure and we’ll be bringing more Leeches and Night Crawlers along for the ride.
