With a few days of much needed rest after last weekends flurry of walleye activity guests wasted no time making their way back up north to Leech Lake for the Memorial Day holiday, our driveway wasn’t as busy as highways 94, 10 or 371 but we still had plenty of back-ups and traffic jams, most of which were excited anglers maneuvering their way to and from the boat ramp.
Last weeks fishing started as a trickle that quickly became a flood and then as quickly as it improved it slowed back down. Early in the week the weather was a bit different than more are accustomed to this time or year, it’s not very often you see frost of the roofs of buildings in late May with temps barely breaking into the 50s for highs. Once we were rid of the cold we had consistent south winds for a few days that pushed piles upon piles of bait fish into the rocks surrounding Pelican Island.

As anyone who’s familiar with Leech Lake will know, this lake needs wind to really get the walleye active and with the lake being especially clear this year, wind is even more important than it usually is. Wednesday turned into quite the day and I’ve been on the lake for quite awhile and have seen some spectacular catches, but this one takes the cake as the single best day of fishing I have seen in probably 20 years. Walleye bit and boy did they bite, it was a frenzy of doubles, triples and quads, Walleye were being pulled in as fast as anglers could put their lines in the water and the fish were big, healthy and beautiful, I was deep in the trenches with our dock crew doing everything we could to keep up with the cleaning, I may have even snagged a few walleye cheeks.
